PBG Geophysical Exploration Ltd.

>>> a bit of history

PBG starts its activity in  May 1950 as a state-own company subordinated to the Ministry of Mining. Since 1952 PBG was under the authority of teh Central Office of Geology, next (1985-1996) the Ministry of Environment, later (1996-2008) Masovian Voivode, and since January 2008 PBG is a company limited under the authority of the Ministry of the Treasury.

Starting its activity (1950-1960) PBG has developed geophysical investigations  for recognition of regional geological structure of Poland and for oil mining purposes. There were also performed detailed geophysical surveys for recognition of raw materials deposits and drinking water resources. To increase prospecting works for oil and gas exploration in Poland, PBG  transferred its seismic branch to newly created company in Kraków. This caused necessity to rebuild PBG’s seismic potential and develop investigations based on non seismic methods as magnetic, gravity, magnetotelluric and resistivity ones.

image008With own imported and geophysical equipment PBG provided geophysical recognition of Poland: semi-detailed gravity, magnetic Z and refraction seismic surveys brought recognition of deep crystalline basement. Wide range of investigation provided information for elaborating gravity, magnetic and consolidated basement maps of Poland. Geophysical surveys were used for prospecting and recognition of raw materials deposits as salt and hard coal deposits (E Poland, Silesia), recognition of brown coal deposits (central and NW Poland), metal ores (NE Poland), copper, sulphur and other. An interesting example of works performed by PBG (early 1960s)  is the  first seismic, reflection image of the Baltic Sea, presenting distinct seismic horizons.

PBG provided geophysical investigations were for industrial investment developed in Poland:  dams projects in Carpathians and along Vistula river (1980-1990), recognition of geological structure for NPP location (1970, 1985-1990), recognition of voids at post-mining areas, etc. Geophysical surveys with the use of resistivity methods were successfully applied for prospecting and recognition of drinking water resources, both in regional scale and for industrial and urban purposes. PBG has developed its own method for investigation of ground water salinity caused by sea-water infiltration or migration of contamination from industrial waste.

Apart of domestic services PBG carried out geophysical surveys abroad  and developed methods for geophysical data interpretation based on newest software. This allowed to create data sets for selected methods and was a base for integrated geophysical-geological interpretation of data.
